If you are buying a fixer upper home, there will be many changes you must make in the interior. You will also likely have to make some changes on the exterior also. One of these changes may be the siding. Below is some more information about this so you can have a home that is beautiful inside and out.

Repair Siding

You may be able to repair the siding instead of replacing all of it, which can save you a lot of time and money. To ensure this is done correctly, you should consider hiring a contractor to repair your siding for you.

If there are large sections with damage, the contractor can remove the damaged sections and replace them with new. If there are small areas that are damaged, the contractor can install a patch in these areas and use caulking to apply it. When finished, you will not be able to tell where the patch is.

If you only have a few small problem areas, you can purchase siding repair kits at home improvement stores and repair the siding yourself to save some money.

Clean Siding

Because the rest of your siding is old, the new and old will not match. For this reason, you need to clean the siding. You should use trisodium phosphate cleaner to clean it, also known as TSP. You can find this cleaner at home improvement stores, hardware stores, and even grocery stores.

Follow the directions on the cleaner on how to mix it with water in a bucket. Purchase a soft-bristled brush that has an extendable handle so you can reach high areas. Scrub small sections of the siding at a time with the brush and cleaner. To avoid streaking, start at the top and move your way to the bottom. Rinse the siding thoroughly as you finish each section to remove the cleaner. If you have a two-story home, you will need to use a ladder. If so, make sure you ask someone to help you.

If you are experienced, you can use a pressure washer to clean the siding to make things easier for you. You can rent pressure washers at home improvement stores if you do not own one. This generally does not cost a lot, and you can rent it for as many days as you need it.

It is vital that you know how to use the pressure washer because if used in the wrong way, you can strip the paint and loosen caulking.
